Why Every Touch or Goal Matters

The United States Men's Soccer Team is playing in a 16-team tournament called the Confederations Cup.  In the preliminary pool round they lost their first two games and things looked grim.  The numbers said they had to beat Eqypt in their third and final pool game by at least three goals, while at the same time Brazil, who was already assured of advancing by winning its first two games, would have to beat Italy by at least three goals.  Well, at the end of premlinary pool, the US, Italy and Eqypt were all 1-2, but both the US and Italy had a minus two goal differential, read indicators, with Eqypt behind on goal differential at minus three.  The US advanced out of pools over Italy because the US scored four goals, while Italy only scored three.  The goal differential in soccer to decide ties is applied identically to the touch indicator in fencing.

The US went on to defeat Spain, the number one ranked team in the world, 2-0 in the Confederations Cup semi-finals.

Car Wash Results

A big thank you to all the fencers who came out and helped at the car wash on Saturday, May 30.  There were 27 of you thru whose hard work we were able to raise over $600.  We washed a lot of cars!  Also, a special thank you to all the prom participants for showing up and working after such a busy night.  I'm sure you would have much rather stayed in bed. Thank you to seniors Andy Jung, Genele Streitz and Chris Bonner for coming to work at their last fundraiser.

Thanks again,
Mrs. Streitz and Mrs. Dabal

P.S. Now that you are so experienced washing cars, surprise dad on Father's Day with a clean car!

New Camp Added to List

A new high-level two-week camp, sponsored by the Island Fencing Academy at No-Sha-Po in the Catskills, has been added to the list of Summer Fencing Camps, which can be found at the bottom of the right-hand column of this blog.  Don't forget to comment on the Clearinghouse post with what camp you are attending.

Fencing Demonstration for Chester Boy Scouts

Monday, May 18, Chester - Members of the two Mendham High School Fencing Teams put on a demonstration of fencing for the Chester Boys Scouts this evening at the Presbyterian Church.  Departing Boys' Captain Andy Jung  and  incoming Girls' Captain Sarah-Emma Graham and Assistant Captain Kim Morsch  led 16 alumni, current and future fencers from the Mendham HS program in its annual demonstration for the boy scouts.  This same demonstration four years ago, in fact, introduced Andy Jung, Chris Bonner and Brian Stellingwerf to the sport.  They were all stars on the boys' team this past winter season.

Participants included alumni Mike Striano, seniors Genele Streitz, Chris Bonner, Tyson James, junior Christopher Franklin, sophomores Lyssa Martin, Shawn Ozarczuk, James Flanagan, freshmen Alex Boden, Lea Fuscaldo and Adam Campos and incoming freshmen Julian Campos and Daniel McDonald.

An explanation of the weapons, two 5-touch electrically-scored bouts in each of the three weapons between the high schoolers and group footwork lessons were followed by allowing the scouts to whack away at each other behind all the right protective garb under the watchful eyes of the high school fencers.

Reminder for Fencers & Parents - Help at the Car Wash on May 30

The car wash fundraiser is on Saturday, May 30, from 10am to 2pm at the High School.  Please report at 9:30.  This is the last fundraiser of the school year.   We need all the parents and kids who signed up (and those who also would still like to help) to show up. It is also an important fundraiser as we typically have raised $1000 and have had fun doing it. Let's work together to meet this goal again. See you there!

MHSFPA Monthly Meeting on Wednesday, 5/27 & Equipment Policy - Parent Review

The monthly MHSFPA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27 at 7 pm at the Chester Library. This is our last meeting before the summer break so please attend! We will be reviewing a significant change to the way fencers borrow team equipment for next season. This is your chance to comment! All fencers will be required to commit to and sign the equipment policy before the season starts.

"You Are a Star"

Tuesday, May 19, Mendham - Every year at this time, each faculty member of Mendham HS is given the chance to anonymously nominate two students who add to the vitality of the high school experience thru their contributions.  There are other awards for good students, athletes, musicians and artists.  The "You Are a Star" award is essentially for good citizenship and attitude, sort of, a well-roundedness, if you will.

We in the fencing program already knew the following fencers were stars, but now we have gotten confirmation from the faculty:

  • James Flanagan, a two-time award winner
  • Beatrice Jacobson
  • James McManus
  • Thomas Myers
  • Brian Stellingwerf, a four-time award winner

Two former members of the program were selected: Tyler Babcock and Masha Lamb.  In addition, the coach's daughter Rebecca Tishman was honored.
